Clinical Trials

There is general support for a number of UKMF studies, and we take a lead role in the comparison of conventional with intensive chemotherapy for younger patients with myeloma - MRC VII. We are currently developing the successor to this trial. We have also just introduced a pilot study of CD38 saporin, and have a general interest in how monoclonal antibody treatments can be used to treat cases of myeloma.

Laboratory Research

We have developed a programme of research into laboratory approaches which can improve patient management. This includes assays for chromosomal abnormalities and mutations which may be of prognostic value, and PCR monitoring of residual disease.

On a more basic level, we have an interest in the molecular pathogenesis of myeloma. In particular, how deregulation of the normal switching mechanism may lead to the development of myeloma.

In conjunction with the LRF Unit for Clinical Epidemiology, we are pursuing a programme examining the effect of environmental factors in the aetiology of myeloma.
